A free panel discussion exploring the challenges, rewards and compromises involved in serving our country will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Ketchum’s Community Library.

The discussion is being held in conjunction with the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ BIG IDEA project “We the People: Protest and Patriotism” and For Freedoms’ “50 State initiative.”

For Freedoms is a nationwide effort of more than 200 arts organizations that are engaging art and artists to encourage public discourse and civic participation.

Tonight’s discussion will feature moderator Courtney Washburn, executive director of Conservation Voters for Idaho.

Panelists are:

  • Amanda Breen, Ketchum City council member
  • Genevieve Chase, a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan who recently became the first Idaho woman named as one of 10 honorees for the 2018 L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth program
  • Mel Ziegler, an artist who journeyed through all 50 United States, exchanging distressed American flags flying at city halls, post offices, hospitals, homes and schools for new flags. He then created the work “Flag Exchange” with the decayed flags.

The panel discussion will provide insight into how individuals in vastly different professions manifest their commitment as citizens,” said Kristin Poole, The Center’s artistic director. “What does an artist’s public work have in common with the work of a soldier or a city council person? What are the benefits and risks of making one’s personal values public? What role do compromise and collaboration play? These are some of the questions we will be exploring…it should be stimulating!”

While free, preregistration is recommended at www.sunvalleycenter.org or by calling 208-726-9491.
